Ed Ruscha: Honored, Does Digger Poster and Dior Design

Keith Haring Mural on Philadelphia Register of Historic Places

Ed Ruscha (b. 1937) was one of the artists who was honored with the 2026 Citizen Artist Award, presented by Americans for the Arts and The United States Conference of Mayors. He was given the award “for his groundbreaking artistic contributions and decades of public art projects that have shaped the American cultural landscape.”

Also honored at the 94th Annual Meeting of The United States Conference of Mayors in Long Beach, California, were Snoop Dogg, Danny Trejo, and Chuck D.

“Snoop Dogg, Ed Ruscha, Danny Trejo, and Chuck D have each shaped American culture in distinct ways while also using their influence to invest in communities, expand opportunity, and inspire civic dialogue.” said David Holt, President of The United States Conference of Mayors and Mayor of Oklahoma City.  “We are proud to recognize their extraordinary contributions through the 2026 Citizen Artist Awards.”

Ruscha designed a poster for Alejandro González Iñárritu’s  recently released movie “Digger.”  The poster was unveiled by filmmaker Alejandro Iñárritu and star of the film, Tom Cruise, on September 27th at a Sunday brunch at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

The poster reflects the movie’s theme…a global disaster in Greenland, created when an oil rig, owned by Ton Cruise’s character, Digger, explodes.

Ruscha’s poster depicts a giant iceberg, surrounded by words, printed  in Boy Scout Utility Modern font, which Ruscha designed himself.

The poster is wonderful, but the movie has gotten mixed reviews.

Rusha has gotte  great reviews for his collaboration with fashion designer, Jonathan Anderson’s Cruise 2027 Collection for Dior. Ruscha’s lettering and shadow designs grace a collection of men’s shirts.

“When I think of LA, I think of Ruscha’s work,” Anderson said, “which has this fascinating sense of the mundane and how it relates to the city’s grandeur.”

Keith Haring’s We The Youth mural, painted in 1987, has been officially added to the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places by a unanimous vote of the Philadelphia Historical Commission.

The building that the mural is painted on is co-owned by the Neighborhood Gardens Trust and a realty company, so maintenance of the mural is still unclear.

We the Youth is the only surviving collaborative mural painted by Keith Haring in its original condition and location.
