The works of David Hockney (1937–2026) are currently on view at the Tampa Museum of Art. The paintings and prints which were created between 1954 through 2022, demonstrate Hockney’s ability to adapt to his surroundings and to the devices, like office copiers, iPhones, and iPads, that became available to him during his sixty-year career.
“I’m convinced that technology and art go together, and always have, for centuries.” Hockney said.
The traveling exhibition features over 160 prints, collages, photographs, and iPad drawings from the collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and his Family Foundation.
David Hockney: Perspective Should Be Reversed will be on view at the Tampa Museum of Art through February 28, 2027. Hotel Acatlan: Two Week Later, 1985, available at VFA, is an wonderful example of Hockney’s playful observations and use of perspective.
An astute volunteer at the Salvation Army in Norwich, England found a signed print by David Hockney inside a copy of a 1980 edition of his Paper Pools book.
The book and print were auctioned on the Salvation Army’s eBay site. It was bought by an anonymous donor for £41,160, about $55,000. A Special Proof of Paper Pool, 1980, from the Paper Pool series is available at VFA.
A painting of David Hockney’s dachshund, Stanley, was auctioned at Christie’s on October 14th. Dog Painting 17 sold for £3,506,000, about $4,689,000, nearly twice the auction estimate. The painting is part of Hockney’s Dog Paintings series that he made between 1994 and 1995 of his beloved dachshunds, Stanley and Boodgie.
Hockney painted his friends, his family members (and, of course, his dogs). He moved from the UK to Los Angeles in 1964. He painted pools of LA, and also the friends he made there.
A recently published book by critic and novelist James Cahill looks at the relationship between Hockney and Betty Freeman, the subject of Hockney’s painting Beverly Hills Housewife, 1966–67. The painting was made at a time when both the artist and his subject were going through changes in their lives.
The Beverly Hills Housewife: Hockney’s Californian Muse and the World Beyond the Pool is out in the U.K. It will be available in the U.S. on November 3, 2026.
