Alex Katz: The Gathering at VFA

In the last 70 years, Alex Katz (b. 1927) has had more than 200 solo shows and 500 group shows around the world.

 

In the past few years he has received much deserved recognition: Alex Katz: Gathering, a powerful retrospective at the Guggenheim in 2022 and was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 2024.

 

At age 98, he continues to create the figurative work that has defined his style, and the landscape paintings, inspired by  visits to his home and studio in Maine. 

 

Katz is a masterful printmaker, a technique he has used for more than 70 years. The Gathering, a recent acquisition at VFA, is based on a 1970s group portrait that was featured in his retrospective. The limited edition silkscreen is six feet wide, and exemplifies Katz’s mastery of gesture, mood and color.

 

A survey of Katz’s drawings is currently on view at the Colby College Museum of Art in Maine. The Colby has the largest collection of Katz’s work of any institution and a wing dedicated solely to his work. The Alex Katz Foundation has donated hundreds of artworks, done by Katz and many contemporary artists, to the Colby as well as to many other museums in the U.S. and Europe.

 

Alex Katz/Out of Sight: A Drawing Survey will be on view at the Colby through October 11, 2026.

 

Alex Katz: Dancing with Reality, on view at Kunsthalle Tübingen in Germany, is an exhibit that includes many of his recent, expressive landscapes, alongside paintings and prints that he has done since the 1990s. The exhibit will be on view through September 26, 2026.

 

An exhibit of Katz’s work will be shown at the Musée Matisse in Nice, France. Henri Matisse/Alex Katz will be on view from October 28, 2026 through January 18, 2027.

 

Katz’s work will be part of Histories of Landscapes. From Monet to Hockney (1890 - 2025), a group exhibit that will be on view at Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris from September 24, 2026 through January 31, 2027 and then travel to Musée de Grenoble from March 5, 2027 thought July 4, 2027.
