In the past five years, Yoshitomo Nara (b. 1959) has had retrospectives of his work shown at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2021–22), the Aomori Museum of Art in Japan (2023–24), the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain (2024), the Museum Frieder Burda in Baden-Baden, Germany (2024–25) and the Hayward Gallery in London (2025).
His first major solo exhibit in New York in nearly a decade opened at David Zwirner Gallery on November 5th and will be on view through December 12, 2026.
Nara’s images of rebellious, sad, angry, and, sometimes expressionless faces have gained him a wide Gen-Z audience, able to relate to the feelings that his portraits convey.
Nara was born and raised in Japan and studied art in both Germany and Japan. In 2011 an earthquake and tsunami devastated northeastern Japan, including the Tōhoku region where he grew up. The shock of the event left Nara unable to paint for a while. He completed just one painting that year; a large 8.5 feet by 6 feet portrait titled In the Milky Lake / Thinking One. The child in the painting is standing in a body of water with a sad, quiet look on her face. The painting is set to be auctioned by Fair Warning app on November 19, with an estimate of $10 million to $15 million.
The Dali Museum in St. Petersburg is presenting Dalí: Disruption + Devotion, an exhibit of 67 works, by Salvador Dali (1904-1989) and the artists whose works influenced his style and oeuvre.
The exhibit was co-organized by The Dalí Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and includes work by El Greco, Orazio Gentileschi and Diego Velázquez, works that span nearly five centuries.
Dali was not just a painter, he was also a fine printmaker. He began printmaking in the 1920s and continued to create etchings, engravings and lithographs throughout his life.
Fleurs Surrealistes, a lithograph done in 1980, is available at VFA.
Dalí: Disruption + Devotion will be on view at the Dali Museum from November 7th through April 18, 2027.
