Celebrating Pop at the Guggenheim

The Guggenheim is currently exhibiting Pop art works created by both mid-century modern and contemporary artists. The exhibit explores the way in which artists redefined the boundaries of art in the 1960s and how contemporary artists continue to use popular cultural references in their works.

 

The New Oxford American Dictionary defines Pop Art as “art based on modern popular culture and the mass media, especially as a critical or ironic comment on traditional fine art values.”

 

One of the most interesting aspects of the exhibit is the history of Pop art which took hold firmly in America in the 1960s. The Pop art movement was actually introduced to American audiences by British curator and critic Lawrence Alloway, who initially used the term mass popular art and then Pop art. Alloway introduced Pop art to American audiences through the 1963 Guggenheim exhibition Six Painters and the Object, which was the first museum presentation of Pop art in New York.

 

The works on view are from the Guggenheim’s permanent collection and include works by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Jim Dine, Cleas Oldenberg alongside works by contemporary artists.

 

Guggenheim Pop: 1960 to Now will be on view through January 10, 2027.

An exhibit of works by Pop artist Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997) opens at the Whitney on September 5th. Roy Lichtenstein 1997 is focused on the work that he created in the last year of his life.

 

Roy Lichtenstein 1997 will be on view in conjunction with a larger exhibit that will showcase his works from the 1940s through the 1990s.

 

 

The roughly 130 works include painting, drawing, collage, prints, sculpture, and film, including, for the first time, all the works from Lichtenstein’s first exhibition of Pop-style work at Leo Castelli Gallery in 1962.

 

Roy Lichtenstein: Like New will open at the Whitney on October 11, 2026.

Also on view at the Whitney are photos from the collection of Andy Warhol (1928–1987). Warhol purchased his first Polaroid camera in the mid-1960s and photographed much of his life and work.

 

Andy Warhol Family Album focuses on Polaroids that Warhol took of family, friends  and celebrities from 1972 through 1973. The exhibit will be on view through October 10, 2026. A more expansive look at Warhol’s works are on view at the Huntsville Museum of Art. The exhibit opened with a party, celebrating what would have been Warhol’s 98th birthday on August 6th.

 

 

Included in the exhibit are Warhol’s celebrity screenprints , fashion designs, films and photos.Warhol: film, fashion, photography will be on view at the Huntsville Museum through October 18, 2026.
