I take my camera everywhere. Having a few rolls of film to develop gives me a good reason to get up in the morning. - Andy Warhol
Andy Warhol (1928–1987) was a keen observer and chronicler of mid-twentieth century America and of the world that he created in New York.
Warhol often carried a Polaroid camera with him and photographed celebrities at clubs and parties. Many of those photos were turned into portraits.
One of Warhol’s studio assistants at The Factory, Ronnie Cutrone (1948–2013), an artist in his own right, took stereoscopic slides of the work that was created and of the visitors who graced the studio.
Cutrone’s 3-D slides, more than 400 of them, have been donated to The Smithsonian Archives of American Art. Included are photos of Mick Jagger, Debbie Harry, David Hockney, Bruce Nauman, Al Green, Lou Reed, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Some of the most striking images in the collection are photos of Georgia O’Keefe viewing her portrait at The Factory.
Shortly after Warhol moved to New York from Philadelphia in
1949, he became a successful commercial illustrator. He was hired by Glamour, Mademoiselle, Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar before having his first solo exhibit at the Hugo Gallery in New York in 1952.
Works like Flowers, 1974, available at VFA, are evidence of Warhol’s talent as a fine artist, as well as a commercial artist.
He is best known for his portraits of celebrities and consumer goods and the talent and hard work that went into each work is often overlooked. That his works are sought after around the world, is a testament to his brilliance and relatability.
A survey of Warhol’s works, including early drawings, screenprints and photographs are currently on view in the UK at the University of Nottingham. The works on exhibit are part of the collection jointly owned by Tate and National Galleries of Scotland. Andy Warhol: Pop Icon will be on view through April 19, 2026.
