The works of Damien Hirst, Shepard Fairey and French street artist Invader are being shown together at the Newport Street Gallery in London.
Although their works are very different and they grew up in different countries, all three artists are Gen Xers, who began their careers as digital technology was emerging.
Hirst was born in Bristol, England in 1965, attended Goldsmiths College and became part of the Young British Artists group. Fairey was born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1970 and attended the Rhode Island School of Design. Invader was born in France and studied at École des Beaux-Arts.
In an Instagram post about his collaboration with Hirst and Invader, Shepard Fairey wrote, “What I really appreciated is the powerful sensitivity of these two. It pushes you to think more, down to the millimeters, the distances between things, and the colors. There are so many surprises. The excitement comes precisely from the differences, but also the similarities. And that’s not a given: artists can be difficult, but those two are incredible people as well as great artists.”
The Newport Street Gallery was founded by Damien Hirst. The exhibit was curated by his son, 30-year-old Connor Hirst.
Triple Trouble is currently on view at the gallery and will run through March 29, 2026.
Before the heist at the Louvre on October 19, and a heist at storage facility belonging to the Oakland Museum of California on October 15, there was a heist at Damien Hirst’s studio in west London on June 30th.
Four suspects are in custody in Paris and two suspects were caught on surveillance video in Oakland but have not yet been found. The man who broke into Hirst’s studio has been given a 32-month sentence for stealing over $6,000 worth of items.
Liam Middleton-Gomm, 36, had 39 previous convictions and was wearing an ankle bracelet with a GPS that was found at the scene of the burglary, along with DNA.
Middleton-Gomm stole several leather jackets that were being decorated by Hirst, trousers, embroidered shirts, and a Dior pram with silver skulls on the wheels. Some of the property was sold and has not been recovered.
Ironically, the thief passed on artworks by Hirst that are probably worth much more than trousers and a pram.
