Art critics, art historians, filmmakers, documentarians and art curators have been examining the life and persona of Andy Warhol for decades.
An exhibit, curated by British art historian Jean Wainwright, is currently on view at Newlands House Gallery in the UK. Wainwright is a senior lecturer at the University of Creative Arts in southern England. She did her doctorate on audio tapes that Warhol created over a decade and visits to his family in Pittsburgh. Her goal, like most of those who research Warhol’s life, was to find out what he was really like. “I realized as soon as I started listening to the tapes and meeting the family that he was such a multi-faceted person.” she said.
Warhol started Interview magazine in 1969. To this day, the magazine presents excellent interviews with artists, but Warhol’s own interviews can be almost painful to watch. "If you want to know all about Andy Warhol, just look at the surface of my paintings and films and me, and there I am. There's nothing behind it.” he said in a 1966 interview.
Warhol studied art at Carnegie Mellon and began his career as a very successful illustrator in New York. Although best known for his Campbell’s Soup Cans, he also dealt with more serious subjects like Civil Rights, the death penalty and endangered animal species.
The mystery of Andy Warhol will continue to be just that-a mystery-but the immense impact of his life and work on the art world is clear. Andy Warhol: My True Story is on view at Newlands House Gallery in Petworth, West Sussex, UK, until 14 September 2025.
An exhibit of Warhol’s self-portraits and his portraits of cultural icons will be presented this fall at Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo. The works are from the Foundation Louis Vuitton collection and are being exhibited free to the public, as part of the Foundation’s Hors les murs program. Andy Warhol: Serial Portraits will be on exhibit from October 2, 2025 through February 15, 2026.
The impact of artist Tom Wesselmann (1931-2004) on the current generation of artists, like Derrick Adams, was the subject of Pop Forever, Tom Wesselmann &… at Fondation Louis Vuitton Paris this year.
The show was a wonderful homage to the artist whose bold style and colors pushed art in America to a new level. Wesselmann did pay his respects to his contemporarires: Still Life with Liz and Still Life with Lichtenstein, available at VFA, are done with both respect for Warhol and Lichtenstein...and a bit of the Wesselmann humor.
Please contact us if you would like more information about the works of Andy Warhol, Tom Wesselmann, Derrick Adams and Roy Lichtenstein available at VFA.
