Biography

Michal Chelbin is an Israeli photographer born in 1974 in Haifa, Israel. She studied at the Wizo Academy of Design and Education in Haifa and later at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem. Chelbin is known for her portraits of individuals from marginalized communities, often exploring themes of identity, gender, and power dynamics.

 

Chelbin's work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions internationally, including at the Photographers' Gallery in London, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, and the Fotografiska Museum in Stockholm. She has also been the recipient of several awards and honors, including the Guggenheim Fellowship in 2014 and the Israel Museum's Shpilman International Prize for Excellence in Photography in 2016.

 

In addition to her photographic work, Chelbin has also directed several short films and music videos. Her films have been screened at international film festivals, including the Cannes Film Festival and the Sundance Film Festival.

 

Chelbin continues to live and work in Israel, where she is recognized as one of the country's leading contemporary photographers. Her haunting and intimate portraits invite viewers to contemplate the complexities of human experience and the power of image-making to shape our understanding of the world around us.
